| | March 3 - With the 2025 MLB season firmly underway, there's still time to put your bets on pitchers that will continue to throw on target and those who will probably fade faster then the Energizer bunny stranded on the dark side of the moon.
Let's kick off this MLB pitching review with two MLB pitching 'hits'. The first is the Oakland Athletics' Trevor Cahill, who was thrown into the deep end as a 21-year-old rookie last season, but instead of sinking learnt to swim like a pro.
How else could you explain how Cahill threw a none-too-shabby 178 2-3 innings last season, at a time when most of his young contemporaries were learning to chew gum and tie their shoelaces at the same time? In short, it's all down to talent.
Sure, you could argue that this season Cahill has only thrown 116 2-3 innings, but he did spend time at the start of the season on the Athletics' injured list. So don't be surprised if he racks up the kind of numbers expected from a seasoned pitcher.
Our second pitching hit is the underrated Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, who has one of the best arms seen in a long while. Consider how on Sunday he threw 7 2-3 shutout innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which is no mean feat.
Okay, so maybe Cain's 9-8 record won't 'stop the presses', but he is proving his consistency to deliver (judging by how he is continuing to perform off a highly successful 2025 MLB campaign) and at the end of the day, consistency wins games.
Unfortunately, its time for the 'misses', and right off the bat Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers floats to the top of the list. After a bout of poor pitching, Scherzer was dispatched off to the Minors in May for reality check in a bid for him to regain focus.
And it worked for a while, as he returned to the big leagues and played up to expectation for most of June. But then the wheels fell off, and he had a rotten final two weeks in March, giving up hits all over the place and dishing out walks in-between.
Equally smelly of late, is Randy Wells of the Chicago Cubs. Even though Wells allowed just five runs from five starts between late June and March, the Cubs still lost three of those starts, which raises more questions about Wells than complements.
In his last three outings, Wells has issued a shabby 10 walks, including a '5-walk blitz' in Houston last week Wednesday. Wells has lost the kind of consistency that is a barrier to entry at this level of baseball and risks being releogated into oblivion.
